Department of Education Scholarships

A.A.U.W., Amarillo Branch, Ruby Lee Smith Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide scholarships for WTAMU education students planning to teach history and/or social studies and to honor the memory of Smith. The recipient must be a full-time female junior or senior student having completed one semester at WTAMU and one or more of the Fundamentals of Education courses and must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to secondary education students planning to teach history and/or social studies. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Arnold Gentry and Vivian Dunn Attebury Memorial Scholarship in Education was established in 1996 in honor and memory of Arnold and Vivian Attebury and to provide scholarships for junior, senior, and graduate education majors. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have completed two semesters at WTAMU.

Mary Collins Bagot Scholarship was established in 1995 to honor Bagot and to provide scholarships to junior, senior, and graduate education majors. The recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have completed two semesters at WTAMU.

Barbara Bain Scholarship was established in 2014 with a gift from Mike Bain in honor of his mother Barbara and her 35 years of teaching elementary education. The recipient must be a full-time junior or senior education major with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Raymond W. and Enid Bates Scholarship Fund was established in 1989 by the Iota Theta Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi to honor the late husband of Dr. Enid Bates, professor of education at WTAMU since 1970. The recipient must be a junior, senior, or graduate (preference to undergraduates) education majors planning a career in teaching with preference to Kappa Delta Phi members or those who are eligible for membership.  Students must have attended WTAMU for at least two semesters and maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA.

Helen Slater Bentley Education Scholarship was established in 2006 by Ben and Pam Bentley in honor of Ben’s mother, Ms. Helen Slater Bentley.  The recipient must be a junior or senior education major with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Edna Burdine Bridwell Scholarship (formerly the Edna Burdine Bridwell Loan Fund) was originally set up as a loan fund and in 2010, was converted to a scholarship. The recipient must be a single parent who is a sophomore elementary education major with a minimum 2.8 GPA. With the application, submit a 500-word essay describing your current conditions and future goals and send via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.

Dr. Robin L. Capt Memorial Scholarship in Education was established in memory of Capt to provide scholarships to education majors and members of the Kappa Delta Pi organization. Capt was a beloved professor at West Texas A&M University and served as the associate dean of graduate school. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother that gave to others before herself. The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate education major and member of Kappa Delta Pi. The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Delee Taylor Carter Endowed Scholarship in Education was established in honor of Carter by her family. Mrs. Carter, a 1960 graduate of WTAMU, served the community as a teacher for 32 years in Amarillo. The recipient must be a full-time education major with preference to elementary education majors with an emphasis on reading. Also, preference will be given to students demonstrating strong leadership capabilities.

Leta M. Cayton Memorial Scholarship was established by Patrick Hunt and Suzanne Chock Hunt in memory of Cayton to provide scholarships to students pursuing a teaching career. The student must be a full-time education major with an emphasis in bilingual education/secondary Spanish or ESL and must submit two letters of recommendation from faculty.  Letters may be sent via email attachment to scholarships@wtamu.edu.

Childre-Mayhew Scholarship was established in 1982 in honor of Edith Childre and Ruth Mayhew and is awarded to teacher-education students.

E.R. “Dutch” and Odessie Cleavinger Award was established in 1995 to provide two math awards annually-one to an outstanding junior math major and one to an outstanding math education major.

Frances Collins Christian Scholarship was established in 1998 by gifts from family and friends to honor Christian and to provide scholarships for WTAMU students majoring in education. The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) junior, senior, or graduate education major with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and completed two semesters at WTAMU.

Allie Smith Collins Scholarship was established in 1994 by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Collins to honor her memory.  Collins taught first grade for 26 years in the Canyon schools.  Recipients must be junior, senior or graduate students majoring in education with a minimum 3.0 GPA and two semesters at WTAMU.

Peggy and Bill Cotton Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide scholarships for graduates of Vega High School who are in the top third of their class and who wish to pursue a career in education. In 2000, it was expanded to include students graduating from any high school in Oldham County and also include counseling students and those involved in the PACE program. The student must be enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) unless a counseling or PACE program student and must maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Nadine Crum, Karen Burkhart, and Bryna Harris Education Scholarship was established to provide scholarships for full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior education majors, preparing to teach in Texas public schools, with an overall 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to descendants of Nadine Crum, graduates of Perryton High School, or others qualified from the northernmost 26 counties of Texas.

Elva Mae Deer Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 to provide scholarships to assist students in education to pursue teaching certificates. Recipients must be full-time students.

Betsy Dickerson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1983 by the family and friends of this Amarillo High School senior. The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) education major pursuing a teaching career and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Carolyn Easterling Memorial Fund (formerly Metro AMBUCS/Carolyn Easterling Memorial Fund) was established in 1997 to honor the memory of Carolyn Easterling and provide scholarships to qualified education majors.  The recipient must be a junior or senior education major enrolled full time (12 hours per semester) and must maintain a 3.0 GPA.  Additionally, financial needs will be considered.

Education Credit Union Scholarship for Special Education Majors was established to aid in attracting education majors to the special education field.  The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) special education major with a preference for students interested in learning disabilities.

Dorothy Egerton Farley Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor Farley and to provide scholarship opportunities for WTAMU students majoring in elementary education. The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) elementary education major who might not otherwise be financially able to attend college. The student must have a 3.0 GPA and be of good moral character. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Sergeant First Class Tommy I. Folks Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established to honor SFC Folks by the Soldiers of Alpha Company, upon their return from duty in Iraq. The recipient must be an education or sports and exercise science major and then determined by the following criteria: a member of good standing in the Texas Army National Guard, or a dependent of a current or retired Texas Army National Guardsman; or, if neither previous criteria can be met, the scholarship can be opened to any student entering into education or sports and exercise science major, enrolled in either courses each semester and must maintain a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Future Teacher Blue Chip Recruits Scholarship was established in 2002 to provide scholarships for future teachers. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate students enrolled in a WTAMU teacher preparation program, identified as “Future Teacher Blue Chip Recruits” by the department or students who have completed an “Agreement to Participate and Declaration of Intent to Teach” form. Entering freshmen students must be in the top quarter of their high school graduating class and must maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA. Sophomore and junior students must maintain a cumulative 2.7 GPA and senior students must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the following high-needs areas of the teacher preparation program: mathematics, science (including life science and physical science), special education, languages other than English, technology, and bilingual education. Additional qualifications may be determined by WTAMU. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Future Teacher Scholarship was established in 2001 and provides scholarships for education majors planning a career in teaching. The recipient must have a 3.25 GPA.

Kenneth and Christine Gibson Scholarship was established in 1993 and is awarded to students majoring in education with preference to first-year to entering freshmen and elementary education majors. This scholarship is renewable if the student maintains a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Clyde V. Goodwine Scholarship was established by friends and family of Goodwine to provide scholarships for students who wish to pursue a teaching career. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) students from the Texas Panhandle who are pursuing teacher certification and who maintain a 2.5 GPA.

Howard D. Graves Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarships for education majors. The recipient must have junior standing or above; hold the highest grade point average of those applying; must be able to demonstrate financial need; be enrolled in a regular teacher certification program; and be recommended by the Education Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Ted Guffy Scholarship Fund was established in honor of Dr. Norman T. Guffy Jr., who retired Aug. 31, 2006, after a 44-year career as an educator in Oklahoma and Texas. In 1990, he moved to WTAMU where he served six years as division head and 10 years as dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences. First consideration will be given to an incoming freshman female athlete who graduated from Canyon High School and plans to major in Education. If no applicant is found that meets these criteria, another Education major may be considered. Additionally, the student must maintain a 2.75 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

H.K. “Tex” and Ruth R. Guthrie Scholarship Fund was established by family and friends honoring the memory of Herbert K. and Ruth R. Guthrie and providing scholarships to WTAMU students pursuing a degree in education. The recipient must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA and be committed to teaching in the public school system.

Rose T. Hall Math Education Scholarship was established in 1998 to honor Hall and provide scholarships for math education students.  Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior math education majors.

High Plains Instructional Staff Development Scholarship provides scholarships for undergraduate students enrolled in a WTAMU teacher preparation program for not less than 12 semester credit hours; undergraduate students who have completed an “Agreement to Participate and Declaration of Intent to Teach Form”; graduate students currently enrolled in a WTAMU teacher preparation program for not less than six semester credit hours; and students enrolled in the Panhandle Alternative Certification Program. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the following high-need areas of the teacher preparation program: mathematics, science (including life science and physical science), special education, languages other than English, technology, and bilingual education. Additional qualifications may be considered.

LaRue Hite Education Scholarship was established in 2001 to provide scholarships to returning women students majoring in education. Preference is given to female students returning to or beginning school later in life and pursuing a career in teaching. The scholarship may be renewable at the committee’s discretion.

Instructional Technology Scholarship provides scholarships to students pursuing a graduate degree in Instructional Technology. The recipient must be enrolled in a minimum of six graduate-level hours and must maintain a 3.0 GPA.  The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Mary Ann Winfrey Juels Scholarship was established in 1994 to provide a scholarship to a junior, senior or graduate student majoring in education, preferably elementary education, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference for graduates of high schools in the Texas Panhandle.

Myles Adrian and Imogene Kelly Memorial Scholarship was established by J.D. and Kay Kelly Swinford in honor of her parents to provide scholarships for education majors and/or students pursuing a career in teaching. The student must be a graduate from Pampa High School, Canyon High School, Dimmitt High School, Paschal High School, or Perryton High School enrolled a minimum of nine hours per semester and must maintain a 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Dr. Jim L. and Sue Carole Kidd Scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Kidd, relatives, friends, and students who have known Jim or Sue Carole Kidd. Dr. Kidd served as a WTAMU dean of education. The recipient must be a Caprock High School, Amarillo, Texas graduating senior, a spouse or child of a CHS graduate, demonstrate financial need, enroll as a full-time student at WTAMU, and enter a teacher education program.  The student must also have a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Dr. Mike King Scholarship was established in 1999 by friends and family to honor King and to provide scholarships for graduates of a Canyon Independent School District high school who wish to pursue a career in education. Students must be enrolled full-time (12 hours per semester) and meet requirements for admission to WTAMU and the education program. In alternate years, the scholarship will be given to elementary education and secondary education majors.

Glenn and Sallie Lloyd Education Scholarship was established in 2004 by Glenn and Sallie Lloyd to promote the teaching profession through a scholarship. The student must be a junior or senior education major and must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.  An elementary education major seeking classroom teacher certification will be selected on odd-numbered years and a secondary education major seeking classroom teacher certification will be selected on even-numbered years.

Wanda Claborn Lockridge Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 by Roxanne Carter and Melanie Fletcher in memory of their mother, Wanda Claborn Lockridge. The recipient must be an education major and maintain a 2.5 GPA.

J.B. and Lois Lowe Endowment Fund was established by the Amarillo Branch of AAUW, relatives, and friends who have known and loved J.B. and Lois Lowe. Recipients must be full-time (12 hours per semester) junior, senior or graduate education majors pursuing a career in classroom teaching. The student must have completed at least two semesters at WTAMU and maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA.

Ruth Lowes Scholarship was established in 1991 to honor Lowes, professor in education for 50 years at WTAMU. Recipients must be junior, senior, or graduate education majors planning a teaching career. The student must have completed two semesters at WTAMU and maintained at least a cumulative 3.25 GPA.

Joyce Marsh Early Childhood Education Scholarship was established to honor Joyce Marsh for her dedication and passion for public education. The recipient must be pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education and must maintain a minimum 2.25 GPA.

Nancy McCaslin Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 as a tribute to McCaslin who was dorm matron of McCaslin Hall, formerly known as Randall Hall. Students must be full-time undergraduate juniors pursuing any education certification degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Greg and Denise Mills Memorial Scholarship was established by Cactus Feeders Inc. to provide an annual award to a full-time sophomore, junior or senior student majoring in agriculture and/or education with a 2.5 GPA. Priority is given to families of employees of Cactus Feeders Inc. and to graduates of Dumas High School.

James A. and Mildred Turnbow Montgomery Scholarship in Education was established by the Montgomery's who are both WT alumni.  The recipient must be a full-time education major and must maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA.

Jo Mozola Scholarship for Excellence in Teaching (formerly John and Jo Mozola Education Scholarship) was established in 1999 to provide scholarships to students pursuing a degree in education who intend to teach in Potter and Randall counties. The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) junior pursuing a degree in education with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference to students from the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle and those who intend to teach in Potter and Randall counties. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Nathaniel “Nat” and Helen Neal Scholarship, established in 1994 by gifts in memory of Neal and from friends of education, provides scholarships to students majoring in education. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate education majors planning a career in teaching and who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Preference is given to minority students. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

PACE-MENTOR Panhandle Alternative Certification for Educators Scholarship was established as a program fund and in 2015, a scholarship addendum was established for the awarding of scholarships to student in extenuating circumstances. Need and leadership will be considered.

Panhandle Council of Administrators of Special Education Scholarship was established by PCASE, an organization made up of special education directors from the Region 16 area. The organization collects dues from directors every school year and some of the funds are used to provide scholarships for college students pursuing degrees related to the special education field in public education.  The recipient must be a graduate student who resides in the Region 16 area seeking a degree in the educational diagnostician program.

Gerald G. and Mary E. Parker Scholarship was established in 1999 by Dr. Parker and matching funds to provide scholarships to members of Kappa Delta Pi with a 3.0 GPA.

Dipakben J. Patel Endowed Scholarship was established by gifts from Dr. and Mrs. Suryakant J. Patel and friends to provide scholarships to full-time junior, senior or graduate students, preferably female in teaching education, social work, or nursing with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Dr. E.B. and Martha Elizabeth “Beth” Posey Education Scholarship was established in 2013.  E.B. Posey and Beth Patton married in 1946 and moved to Canyon in 1967.  Dr. Posey taught at WT and retired after 20 years of service and was named Professor Emeritus in 1993. The recipient must be an education major with a commitment to teaching in the top 26 counties of the Texas Panhandle and must also maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Ima Scott Redden College of Education Scholarship was established in honor of Ima Scott, a native of Mobeetie, Texas. She and her sister, Eddie Mae Scott, graduated from West Texas State Teachers College. Ima spent her entire life teaching elementary school in Mobeetie, Briscoe, Shamrock and then in Oregon. She received an advanced degree at the University of Colorado and taught geology at Baylor University. The recipient must be an undergraduate full-time female student majoring in education or intend to teach with a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

J.W. “Ted” Reid Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 in memory of Reid, long-time area educator, for junior or senior education majors pursuing a teaching career.

Dr. Don A. Rice ‘66 and Sara Slagle Rice ‘66 Endowed Scholarship was established from an initial gift by the Rice’s to provide assistance to mature, non-traditional students who are seeking to better themselves through education.  The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) undergraduate student working toward a degree in teacher education with a family income of $50,000 or less. Also, must be a Texas resident for at least two years with preferences in the following order:  married parent with children living in the home who is attempting to juggle work and care of children; a single parent with children living in the home who is attempting to juggle work and care of children; student 25 years or older, married with or without children living in the home; and student 25 years or older, married with or without children living in the home working toward a master’s degree in teacher education.

Geneva Schaeffer Scholarship in Education was established in honor of Schaeffer and her passion for education. The recipient must be a full-time (12 hours per semester) junior or senior education major with a 3.0 GPA.

Eddie Mae Scott College of Education Scholarship was established in honor of Scott, a native of Mobeetie, Texas. She and her sister, Ima Scott, graduated from West Texas State Teachers College. She loved teaching and spent her entire life teaching, the past 30 plus years at Forest Hill Elementary School in Amarillo. The recipient must be an undergraduate full-time female student majoring in education or intend to teach with a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.

Douglas Alfred Shirley Scholarship was established in 1995 by family and friends of Dr. Shirley, one-time dean of WTAMU, to honor his memory and to provide a scholarship for a junior or senior education major with a 3.0 GPA.

Texas Association of Future Educators (T.A.F.E.) Student Scholarship was established to provide an annual award to two current high school students involved in T.A.F.E. who intend to attend WTAMU and pursue a degree in education. The student must be an incoming freshman enrolled full-time pursuing any education certification degree and must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Also, the student must currently be or previously have been a member of the Region 16 TAFE organization.

Nancy Camp and Mae Townsend Memorial Scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Camp and Townsend because of their love and passion for children’s education. The recipient will be an education major with a preference for elementary education.  Also, preference will be given to juniors and seniors. The student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Ken Waugh Scholarships were established in 1993 and 1995 to provide scholarships for students majoring in counselor education with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Claud and Inell Zevely Scholarship established in 1982, provides scholarships to special education majors with a cumulative 2.5 GPA. The student must take at least 12 hours per semester or complete a minimum of 24 semester hours per year. The scholarship is renewable when criteria are met.
